Morton's Fork the ultimate Win:Win scenario
Morton’s Fork was a system of tax collection devised and made famous by John Morton (1420 - 1500). Archbishop of Canterbury 1486, Cardinal 1489 and Lord Chancellor 1487, Morton was one of the most powerful men in England in the reign of Henry VII, the first Tudor king.
Cardinal Morton would visit noblemen of the time and judge their tax for the coming year. If the hospitality he was given was economical, it was reasoned that his host was saving money and could afford a large gift to the King. If on the contrary the hospitality was sumptuous, he was evidently wealthy and could afford a large gift to the King. These arguments were the two prongs of the fork.
